Our Current Learnings.....
In our classroom we are always working hard to learn essential first grade skills. Here are some of the skills and lessons we are currently working on:

Math- We are working on unit 8- adding two digit numbers. Please complete Curious George Skills 35-36-37-38 if your child needs extra practice with this skill. Try using multiple strategies to find the answer. Students can add two digit numbers by lining the numbers up and adding, counting on using a hundred chart, or students can draw tens and ones to help them find the answers.

Reading-We are working on the skill drawing conclusions. Students are learning how to use clues from the text to determine what the author is trying to tell them. We are reading the story The Big Race. Ask your child who won the race and what clues the author gave to show this.

Spelling- We are working on long vowel sounds (CvCe- Consonant Vowel Constant Silent E). Remind your child that the magic e at the end of long vowel words tell the vowel to say its name. The magic e is magical because it is silent. Please use iRead at home for extra phonics help.

Writing- We are writing opinion pieces. Students are currently writing to tell why they are a good leader.

Science- We are working on Earth's resources and where to find them.

Social Studies- For the month of March, we are focusing on Women's History month and our changing world-study of the past to the present.

Math- We are working on unit 7- comparing numbers. Please complete Curious George Skills 29-30-31 if your child needs extra practice with tens and ones. For extra support with comparing numbers, please complete Curious George Skills 32-33-34.

Reading-We are working on the skill sequence of events. Students are learning how to properly sequence events in a story using transitional words such as first, next, then, finally, and last. We are reading the story How Leopard Got His Spots. Ask your child which animals in the story received spots and how they received their spots.

Spelling- We are working on digraph -ch and the trigraph -tch sounds. Remind your child that these letters work together to make 1 sound. -Ch usually comes at the beginning of words and -tch is found at the end of words. Please use iRead at home for extra phonics help.

Writing- We are writing opinion pieces. Students are currently writing about their favorite book and providing evidence to show why it is their favorite book.

Science- We are working on animal groups and how to classify animals.

Social Studies- For the month of February, we are studying famous and important African Americans.
